Walking Safaris

Lemala Walking Safaris offer you the opportunity to explore remote parts of the Serengeti.

In this pristine wilderness blessed with abundant wildlife, your senses, dulled over the years by city traffic, lights and the distractions of the modern world, are quickly restored to a heightened state as we guide you through the bush for an up-close and personal experience with nature and all it entails. Each walking safari is tailored to the group’s ambitions as we immerse you in the African wilderness, far away from the hustle of safari vehicles and tourists.

Our scenic walking areas surrounding our Lodges are characterised by a big variety of habitats: open woodland, rocky outcrops with magnificent boulders, open grassland, hidden valleys, and tree-lined watercourses. These habitats attract resident wildlife throughout the year.

Common Questions

Why a Walking Safari?

Privacy is one of the key benefits of a walking safari. Unlike traditional vehicle-based safaris, you have the chance to explore the wilderness on foot, away from the noise and crowds. This sense of solitude allows you to connect more deeply with the environment around you.
Walking safaris provide a chance to become an active participant in the ecosystem rather than a passive observer. You’ll have the thrill of tracking animals, reading signs of their presence, and truly immersing yourself in their world. This hands-on experience can be incredibly rewarding and offers a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Exploration is a core aspect of a walking safari. Each step you take is an adventure, as you never know what you might encounter next. Whether it’s tracking wildlife, discovering hidden waterholes, or simply taking in the sights and sounds of the bush, every moment is filled with the excitement of exploration. Walking safaris also awaken your senses in a profound way. By moving through the landscape on foot, you’ll be more attuned to the sights, sounds, and smells of nature around you. This heightened sensory experience can bring a new level of appreciation and connection to the wilderness.

What Can I Expect?

Walking Safaris are led by a specialised Lemala Walking Guide, who has undergone Walking and Advance Rifle Handling training, and accompanied by an armed ranger from the National Parks Authority. Guides on walking safaris carry high-calibre rifles as a precaution against encounters with dangerous wildlife, providing a means of protection and ensuring the safety of themselves and their groups in case of emergencies or potential threats. The walk will start off with a briefing from the guide and he will then tailor the walk to meet your interests and requests. The walks either start from the lodge or from a starting point a short drive away from the lodge, depending on seasonal animal movements and the desired length of walk.

What is the Recommended Duration?

We recommend to conduct the walks either in the early morning or in the late afternoon in order to maximise the possibilities of encountering game as they are more active in the cooler hours in the day and to avoid walking in the heat of the African sun. We offer 2 hour, 3 hour or half day walks. Our most popular walk is the 3 hour morning walk as this is the best time of day and duration to fully enjoy the experience. Two hour walks are a great option for the afternoon and the half day walks are a great experience for the nature enthusiast.

What should I bring for a walk?

For walking safaris, it’s important to pack light but also be prepared for the elements and any unexpected situations. Here are a few essential items to consider bringing:
1. Comfortable and sturdy walking boots or shoes with good grip.
2. Lightweight and breathable clothing in neutral colours for blending into the environment.
3. Hat and sunglasses to protect from the sun.
4. Sunscreen and insect repellent.
5. Binoculars for spotting wildlife from a distance.
6. Water bottle and snacks for energy.
7. Small backpack to carry your essentials.
8. Camera or smartphone to capture memories.
9. Any essential personal medications such as anti-allergy tablets, painkillers etc

Remember to always check with your safari guide or tour operator for any specific gear they recommend for the walking safaris you’ll be embarking on.
